Aberdeenshire Council, Transportation & Infrastructure

The stewardship of all the public bridges over the River Dee and its tributaries lies with the Transportation & Infrastructure Service of Aberdeenshire Council.  We are implementing relevant actions from the Catchment Management Plan whenever it seems appropriate as added value to planned maintenance and strengthening works.

In conjunction with the Dee Salmon Fishery Board, we have made a start at improving bridges which cause obstruction to the upstream passage of migratory fish.  All the bridges which would open up access to significant new spawning beds have been identified and surveyed and their waterway capacities have all now been checked out against likely spate flows.  We can now be confident that modifications to make the normal flow deep enough for fish to pass through
will not cause problems at high flow.  The next step is to design these modifications and get agreement to implement them, which we'll do either along with other maintenance works or as a package of improvements spread out over a year or so as our budget permits.
